Top seed Serena Williams staved off a valiant challenge from No. 2 Victoria Azarenka to capture her fifth U.S. Open title in three sets on Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Windy conditions left Williams uncomfortable as the match began. Both women were broken in their first service games, but the first set settled down with steady play. Williams and Azarenka played even until Serena was able to earn a break at 6-5, then serve out the set.
Williams took control early in the second set, breaking Azarenka twice. But the lanky Belarusian did not go quietly, breaking back twice herself to get the set to 5-5. In the second-set tiebreak, Azarenka prevailed 8-6 to send the match to a deciding third set.
Azarenka looked liked she gave all she had to win the second set, as Williams was able to break her twice en route to a 6-1 third set win and the 2013 U.S. Open Championship.
The win marks Williams' first successful defense of her U.S. Open title and her 17th Grand Slam win overall.
Serena Williams (1) defeats Victoria Azarenka (2) 7-5, 6-7 (8-6), 6-1 to win the 2013 U.S. Open Women's Championship.
